Shooter Spotlight: Megan Lee

The purpose of the “Shooter Spotlight” is to help shooters get to know their fellow competitors a little bit better. We cover a wide range of shooters from “Marksman to Master.” This is the 8th interview in the series.

Megan Lee

Megan Lee

Where do you call home?
North Carolina

How long have you been shooting?
About 4 years

How did you get involved in shooting competitively?
I enjoyed shooting, but I didn’t want to hunt. So I asked my mom to find somewhere that I could shoot for fun, then she found out about Sir Walter Gun Club and their junior program, and we tried it out.

What is a little known fact about yourself that your fellow competitors might not know?
Growing up before shooting I competed in pageants, danced, and tumbled

What do you consider your finest shooting achievement.
Winning the gold medal at the National Junior Olympics for the J3 division in 3p small-bore.

What is your favorite pre-match meal?
I would have to say Hampton Inn breakfast consisting of fruit loops and yogurt, or a chocolate chip bagel from Panera Bread.

What is your favorite post match drink?
Water! It’s the best after a long hot North Carolina day.

Do you have a favorite shooting range?
I like the Wake County Firearms and Training Center, where I do all of my practice, just because I am most familiar with it.

Do you have any short term and/or long term goals?
I want to continue to go back to the Junior Olympics, and I’d love to one day shoot for the USA in the Olympics or overseas.

What shooting skill are currently focusing your energy on?
I’m always working on all three of my positions, but recently I got an air rifle, so I am putting a lot of time into that right now.

Thanks Megan for sharing a little bit about yourself with the pronematch.com community!

My rifle started out as a 1903 position rifle from Champions Choice with a beautiful piece of wood. Late 2006 I started working with Kent Reeve, he helped me with my shooting positions and taught me about mental aspects of shooting. His help with my shooting positions is what lead to the stock you see in the photo.

My existing stock was too long in butt stock area. My face was way back on cheek piece. Kent said forearm was longer than I would ever use, even if I grew another 5” taller (not likely) and that extra forearm would only catch more wind when shooting outdoors. As I said, my stock was beautiful and I could not stand the thought of it being cut and modified, so we decided to find a used stock just like mine and modify it.

Kent found the stock from Randy Gregory, a shooter friend and gunsmith he knows. Kent also got butt plate hardware and cheek piece hardware from Randy. That was the beginning of what you see in the picture. He cut off rear of the butt stock to fit my shorter build. He cut off forearm and made it shorter, you can’t see that in the picture but it was done too. My brother helped by cutting cheek piece on his band saw. My brother builds bows and is really good with wood working. If anyone wants a bow, his website is http://www.leebowyer.com. Kent installed the butt plate and cheek piece hardware and Devcon epoxy bedded the action to make it shoot better. He gave the stock back to me and I took over from there and did some painting on it, but never really liked the result. My Dad knew this guy who does painting, mostly helmet paint jobs. That is the paint job you see in the picture. I told the painter I wanted some stars on it and let him use his imagination.

Long story short I got an air rifle recently and it is in aluminum stock totally different than my smallbore rifle. Kent advised me that it would be best if both rifles had same fit and feel, and did some research and found a smallbore rifle that has stock almost identical to my air rifle. I just started shooting it. It is Anschutz 2013 action and I’m having fun learning all the adjustments on the stock.

The stock you see in the picture is for sale if anyone can use it. Just the stock, not anything else! It will be a good stock for another kid that has a petite build like me. I’m selling it inexpensively to try to help someone. The Anschutz 1903 barreled action will fit it. Contact me at southernbell_94@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Sorry I had to break it up into smaller sections so they would post…

Just got off the Butner NC 1000 yard range (today is day one of NC Long Range State Championships) and I have NEVER been so cold in my entire life for 50 degree temps!!! I digress…

The stock in photos is much prettier than photos show, the paint job is really nice. The lucky buyer will love it, as the paint really jumps out. Megan has taken very good care of her gear, always transports the rifle in hardside case, so paint is in excellent condition. The cheek piece adjusts via a thumb wheel, so you can raise and lower it while in shooting position to get that perfect head postion. The butt plate goes in and out and up and down, and rotates as well. Whoever buys this stock won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the information – great story!

I can't say enough about Kent – you could have no finer coach, ever! He is a champion inside and out – and I am very proud to call him a friend.

Good luck in everything you do (especially shooting!)
