London 2012 Shooting Venues Unveiled

The ISSF has posted some information about the 2012 Olympic shooting facilities. Of particular note, the shooting venues will be temporary and disassembled or re-allocated for other uses after the olympics. You can read the whole story here.

    As fine as these temporary facilities may be they are a big bone of contention within English shooting circles. While in England this summer for the Roberts Match I learned of the controversy.

    There would appear to be no rhyme or reason for choosing Woolwich, except that it is closer to the Olympic village. It is more costly to build and staff the facility and there will be no sport legacy. It was felt by the shooting governing bodies of the UK that it would be far better to build extra facilities at Bisley, the National Shooting Center, than erect temporary facilities elsewhere.

    If Bisley, just a 30 minute ride from center London, was the correct place for the Commonwealth Games heald in in Manchester, a much longer trip, then why is it not suitable for the Olympic Games in London they reasoned. They were over ruled by the London Organizing Committee.

    From my perspective it is a shame that they went to Woolwich as any improvement at Bisley is the best intersts of shooting in Great Britain.
