Home-owner’s Insurance and Firearms

The other day I learned that my home-owner’s insurance (Arbella Mutual) has a cap of $2,000 on stolen firearms. My agent told me that it is quite common for many insurance companies to do this and if you have firearms worth more than the cap amount, you might consider purchasing a rider for the policy. The rider costs approximately $5 per thousand and covers the firearms if they are stolen, lost, or damaged. So, $10,000 worth of coverage would cost you $50 per year. You can also add other pieces of equipment to the rider such as spotting scopes, rifle scopes, and shooting clothing. Obviously each insurance company’s policies will be a little different, but in general I thought purchasing a rider to cover my equipment seemed like a pretty good idea. It might be worth checking with your insurance agent to see what your coverage is.

I hear AMICA has started asking if you own any semi-automatic firearms before quoting homeowner’s insurance. The NRA’s webpage for insurance companies doesn’t seem to include homeowner’s insurance policies although some of the companies listed may sell those, too.
