Shooter Spotlight: Leonard Remaly

Leonard Remaly was designated an NRA Smallbore Distinguished Position Rifleman in 1985. He began his shooting career as a member of the Northeastern University Rifle Club and Team in the early 1960s. Len has been a competitor at almost every one of the locations that his professional career has taken him. He enjoyed a brief and successful fling with Armbrustschützen, international crossbow competition. Len has also enriched the sport by coaching juniors for many years.  He has been a mainstay of the Precision Shooting Smallbore Prone Rifle Team at Camp Perry for many years and is a principal reason that team has enjoyed. In addition to his team honors he won the Robert K. Moore Trophy in 2007 indicative of the National Rifle Association Senior Three Position National Outdoor Championship. A man of many talents, the retired engineer, when off of the range, devotes considerable energy into his hobby of brewing beer then testing, and tasting the fruits of his labors.

Dan Feldbusch at NRAblog.com recently did an audio interview with Len on the firing line of the 2008 National Championships. You can listen to the interview below.

pronematch.com on NRA’s Camp Perry Blog

Dan Feldbusch over on the NRA’s Camp Perry Blog was kind enough to mention us on their site (http://www.nrablog.com/2008/07/hopkinton-prone-matches.html). The crew at nrablog.com are doing a great job of covering the National Matches.

Luxurious accomodations

Wow! We really lucked out getting this gem of a hut to stay in while we’re at Camp Perry. Maybe Erik can put a new roof and vinyl siding on after the team match. Erik?

Good Lunch Spot

Here is a nice lunch spot for any one heading out to Camp Perry from the east on I-90. The restaurant is called the Edgewater Grill in Baldwinsville, NY, exit 39 off of 90, just north west of Syracuse. The river is the Seneca River. I’m off and running, check back in soon.

Perry Bound

Erik Hoskins is heading west on interstate 90 making his way to Camp Perry for 3P and was kind enough to send in a picture of the Erie Canal to document his painfully boring journey. To learn more about the history of the Erie Canal go here (it actually is sort of interesting). We’ll be posting some more pictures and blog entries as the next 2 weeks unfold. I’ll be flying out for prone on Saturday.

2007 Camp Perry Results

As happens each year, the NRA has wiped out the previous year’s Camp Perry results (2007) in order to display the upcoming year’s results (2008). I’m not sure why they don’t provide a link to the archived 2007 results each year. Anyways…knowing the 2007 results would soon disappear, I archived them and published them at http://perry.pronematch.com/

Last Hopkinton prone match before Camp Perry

Dan’s World Famous Pit Beans**…fresh from the oven.

Tonight (7/10) will be the last Hopkinton prone match before Camp Perry. We will resume the matches after Camp Perry on July 31st. After tonight’s match we will have kielbasa, Dan’s World Famous Pit Beans**, and coleslaw. The weather forecast is looking great…sunny and 80F.

**The “World Famous” claim has not been substantiated nor do we know if it is credible. However, the beans are very famous in “Dan’s World” which has proven to be quite small.

Holliston teen has a shot at fame

By Michael Morton/Daily News staff
The MetroWest Daily News

Michael Morton/Daily News staff. Holliston resident Kim Coffey lines up a shot during a
recent
match at the Hopkinton Sportsman Association.
HOLLISTON —Like many suburban students, town resident Kim Coffey spent much of her high school life studying to get into college and playing a closely followed interscholastic sport.

But she definitely raised a few eyebrows among her friends’ parents when she mentioned that soccer was not her only after-school activity.

“When you tell people’s parents, ‘Oh, I shoot,’ they just look at you funny,” said Coffey. “It’s just a redneck thing in a lot of people’s minds.”

That “redneck thing” could land the recent graduate of Norfolk County Agricultural High School a spot in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. It has also allowed Coffey to travel around the country with the state’s junior rifle team and to gain local recognition earlier this month for achieving a prestigious mark for young shooters.
