6/27 Results Posted, Hoskins Wins

Here I am preparing the burrito feast.

Conditions were good last night…70F and no wind. It got quite dark for the second stage as some rain clouds moved in. Erik Hoskins won the match with a 399-30x with iron sights; 2nd through 5th place were separated by just a few Xs. Complete results are posted here. After the match we cooked up burritos and quesadillas on the grill.

Weather Update

Looks like the weather will be okay for tonight’s match, a chance of showers but we’ll shoot either way. As a general rule we will always shoot, rain or shine. If there is lightening we delay until the threat has passed.

Match tonight, 6/26: Burritos for dinner!

Don’t forget we’ve got another prone match tonight. And, in an on going effort to overshadow the actual rifle match, we’ll be having burritos on the grill with my homemade flour tortillas and guacamole. If you’ve never had a fresh homemade tortilla on the grill, you’ll want to be sitting down!

Hoskins sweeps the 2008 Massachusetts State Championship

Relay 2 during the prone stage of the 2008 MA State Championship

Erik Hoskins of Rehoboth, MA, claimed both the Prone and 3-Position state championship titles yesterday in Harvard, MA. This is the first time that Massachusetts has held a state championship in over 10 years. Good wind conditions and moderate temperatures set the stage for some great scores. In the team matches, Digby Hand won the prone (Hoskins, Holmes, and Remaly) and Hudson NH Jr Rifle Gold won the 3-Position (Levine, Driscoll, and Auclair).

Top 3 Overall Individual Results
Prone Championship 3-Position Championship
Erik Hoskins 589.040    Erik Hoskins 1140.043
Dan Holmes 585.025 Jacob Costa 1122.036
Brad Driscoll 584.025 Jessica Levine 1114.029

Complete results can be downloaded in PDF format here.

Thanks to Rick Johnson and all the volunteers that graciously offered their time and energy to allow Massachusetts to once again have a state championship.

6/5 Results Posted, Hoskins wins

It was cool, drizzly, and abnormally dark at the match tonight which made it especially tough to shoot irons—even scope! Unfortunately, the fine drizzle got all of our equipment wet so we’ll be doing some cleaning today (except for Erik who doesn’t believe in equipment maintenance). The wind wasn’t too strong but it was changing direction frequently. Despite the adverse conditions, Erik Hoskins still pulled a 400-28x out of his bag of tricks. Nice shooting, Erik. You can see the complete results here.

After the match

We had a great time after the match tonight. Don Norris brought a bag of peanuts that we chomped on while we were waiting for the charcoal to get going. We grilled burgers (fresh ground chuck beef), hotdogs, and had BBQ chips.

It’s gonna be cool and cloudy around 60F, but looks like we’ll be dry. We’ll have hamburgers on the grill after the match. Bring a chair and a beverage.

Temporary Suspension at Blue Trail Range

The 200 yard range at Blue Trail has been temporarily closed. Below is a message from Jim Castonguay the High Power Director of CSRRA:

Dear Fellow High Power Rifle Shooters
As  you may be aware, issues have arisen regarding Blue Trail Range’s High power Rifle Range ( 200 yd range)  impact area.  Rather than go into detail, I have attached some news articles that describe the nature of concerns and complaints.
Blue Trail Range is working to resolve these issues and I feel confident that resolution of the issues will be favorable to Blue Trail Range.
However until these matters are resolved Blue Trail Range has temporarily closed the 200 yard  rifle range to shooting activities in cooperation with authorities.  The closure DOES NOT effect the small bore, commercial, or pistol range activities and CSRRA events in these disciplines have not been curtailed to my current understanding.
Unfortunately until the issues are resolved, CSRRA Highpower Division will be suspending High Power Rifle shooting activities scheduled at the Blue Trail Range until further notice. This includes the Connecticut Big Bore Leagues Scheduled matches on 6/22/08, 7/13/08,  8/17/ 08,  and possibly for the remainder of the season. TheConnecticut State High Power Rifle Championship on 6-08-08 and the Harry Anthony Match on 8-24-08 are also being temporarily suspended.
I will be meeting with fellow directors, members and associates in efforts to restore a portion of the 2008 CSRRA High Power rifle activities, possibly at other venues.  I will keep you informed on the progress.  I would also like to remind all of you of shooting events at our member clubs.  Bell City Rifle club conducts monthly over the course league matches and fun activities,  Fin Fur and Feather also runs a monthly event.  Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club and East Windsor Sportsmans should also be checked out.  Also give Northwest Connecticut Sportsmans a try.  Most if not all of these clubs have web sites and schedules posted.  Westfield sportsmans club in Westfield also runs very nice prone matches and their location is not too far away.  If I left anyone out who ‘s running shooting activities, send me a note and I’ll get it out on the web site.
Please refer to the CSRRA web site for further details, information and announcements. It should be updated in the near future.
Please froward this information to fellow shooters as my e-mial addresses are not complete.
Thank you in advance and I’ll keep you posted.
Sincerely,
Jim Castonguay High Power Director CSRRA

New Website

As you can see, I decided to change the format of the HPM website. I stole the idea from Rick Johnson’s OH match website/blog. The blog format is useful to me for a number of reasons but most importantly it is the ability to update the site from any computer or my iPhone (I know, Geeky). Being able to update the site from anywhere with ease should make for a more useful and dynamic experience (for you the visitor). This site will still largely serve (as it always has) to act as a score board for the HPM matches, but I plan on adding some other content as well (match bulletins, results, etc). The blog format also allows people to leave comments in relation to my posts…I’m not sure if that’s a feature that will really be used, time will tell. You can also subscribe to the RSS feed for the site (if you don’t know what a RSS feed is, you can learn more here).
