South Shore Summer League

The South Summer League kicked off last night in North Easton, MA. The league is 22 shots standing at 200 yards with any caliber rifle. Several of us shoot our .22 caliber rifles at this distance and you would be surprised at how well a .22 can group at 200 yards. After the match, a number of us head over to the Great American Pub for some pizza and a beer.

Gennaro Ciatto, 12 years old, settles in to shoot 200 yards standing.

30 shot group shot by Erik Hoskins last night in prone (we were testing to see how well a particular lot of ammo would shoot at 200 yards). The 10 ring (which includes the smaller X ring) is about 6 inches across so this group is about 4 inches.

Google Keywords

picture-2

Every time someone types a keyword into Google and ends up at pronematch.com, Google Analytics makes a note of it. So over the last year or so, you can imagine we’ve accumulated a fair number of these keywords. Most of them are what you would expect…prone, prone shooting, smallbore, etc. But every once in a while there is a funny or strange keyword that leads someone to this site. I think my favorite from last year was “camp perry evil.” Download the PDF below to take a look at all of the keywords…see if you made the list.

An Army Breakfast is no Mess to Haul….

An Army Breakfast is no Mess to Haul….
by Hap Rocketto

In my salad days, when I was green in judgment, I did a cruise in the Navy and a hitch in the Army. The one consistent element, other than the fact that no uniform ever tailored could make me look any more lean, mean, and warlike than a sack of Maine potatoes, was the quality and quantity of breakfast. In those days the military nutritional pyramid was based upon four food groups; starch, fat, sugar, and caffeine.

I never had a bad meal in the Navy but I can’t say as much for the Army. However, nothing can beat an Army breakfast and the demise of the Camp Perry Mess Hall has pretty much left that gustatory delight a memory for me. Mornings when I knew I wasn’t going to have to shoot rapid fire sitting, I side stepped through the chow line and smiled as a heap of cottage fried potatoes were plopped onto my plate and watched with delight as an aluminum ladle full of bisque colored sausage gravy or creamed beef burst over a fresh baked biscuit like a tsunami surging ashore on an Indian Ocean seafront. Next came the jewel in the crown: eggs to order. Continue reading

5/28/09 HPM Match

Erik Hoskins settles in to shoot some Xs at HPM  Erik Hoskins settles in to shoot some Xs at the HPM

Wow, was the weather crappy at last night’s HPM. Cold, raw, and 47 degrees at match time with a 5mph breeze in your face made it feel like winter. Erik Hoskins and myself were joking that is was warmer when we shot the New Year’s Dewar match in January in 2008! Despite the miserable weather we had 13 hearty shooters show up to freeze their butts off.

Despite the conditions there were a number of high scores…but nobody could compete with Don Norris who turned in an impressive 400-32x. What makes Don’s score even more impressive is that he had lost all feeling in his fingers since his blood had long since evacuated his appendages in order to “survive” the cold temperatures and keep his vital organs warm. You can see complete results here.

5/21/09 HPM Match

Len Remaly basks in the sun as he posts his first stage target.Senior 3P National Champion, Len Remaly, basks in the sun as he posts his first stage target.

It was a beautiful evening last night in Hopkinton. Clear skies, warm temperatures, and milder than forcasted winds set the stage for a very enjoyable evening of prone shooting and stories by the campfire. Despite the wind’s slower than forecasted velocity, it did prove difficult to read the wind correctly. The 75 yard wind flags seemed to be the best bet for gauging the wind last night but even then, there were some wind changes that did not register on the flags until it was too late. John Payton saved me a certain scratch 9 when he exclaimed “Oh Fu@%!” after an errant shot out at 9 o’clock. I didn’t see anything on the wind flags that suggested there had been a change, but I decided to sit tight for awhile to be safe. Chuck Cannon–the hard holder that he is–felt confident that he could handle the wind change, but the fantom wind sucked his shot into the 9 ring, as well, right after a long string of Xs. I waited a bit longer, took my shot when conditions seemed back to normal, and shot a “nipper” ten at 9 o’clock…it was close! You can view the complete results here.

After the match we dined on what is now our traditional fare of 6 large pizzas (2 plain, 2 pepperoni, and 2 Hawaiian). But the highlight of the evening was when James and Margot Lee busted out the S’mores fixins complete with hand-crafted marshmallow sticks made from election-year yard signs!

2009 Brophy Trophy Results

The 2009 Brophy Trophy Match
By Digby Hand

The Brophy Trophy, a stunning copper Revere bowl mounted upon a wooden base, is awarded annually to the winner of a two hundred yard smallbore prone rifle match. Legendary author, firearms expert, researcher, Palma Team member, and Distinguished Marksman Bill Brophy won the bowl in 1938, at St Petersburg, Florida, in a 200 yard prone match. The trophy was recovered from the Brophy Estate and restored by Art Jackson, Olympic medalist, World Champion, and long time friend of Brophy and donated to the Cpl Digby Hand Schützenverein to be placed in competition in honor and memory of Brophy. The winner or the match also receives a lion’s share of the entry fees, the rest being distributed, hyena-like to class winners. 5/14/09 HPM Match

Last night’s match was tough! Winds gusted up into the 30MPH range and was coming from all directions. The storm clouds also made it quite hard to see the target. Nonetheless, we had 11 hearty souls show up to hone their wind doping skills. I managed to come out on top with a 397-21x. You can view the complete results here.

Bring a windbreaker!

We will be shooting tonight despite the dismal forecast. Bring a windbreaker because they are forecasting 40mph gusts. Fun!
