GA: State Smallbore Prone Champs, Aug 18-19

2012 Georgia State Smallbore Prone Championships

The Georgia smallbore championships will be held on August 18-19, 2012 at Riverbend Gun Club just north of metro Atlanta. A new format this year combines metric and conventional matches with metallic and anysight stages over the two days of competition. Day one will be metallic sights using the conventional targets for 50 Yard and Dewar matches then switching to the international metric targets for a Dewar and 100 meter match. Day two will be anysights using the conventional targets for 100 Yard and 50 Meter matches then switching once again to the international metric targets for a Reverse Dewar and 50 Meter match. Sounds confusing? A little perhaps, but should be fun if the correct targets are hung for each stage. This will yield two 1600’s, metallic and scope days, a state conventional prone champion and a state metric prone champion, and the Georgia state 2012 overall prone champion. The stat office will be kept busy, especially at the conclusion of firing on day two, and once all the hanging chads are examined by the following Tuesday, the class and overall winners will be crowned. RBGC is the home of some of the best competition and smallbore facilities anywhere and shooters of all levels are encouraged to attend.

Sailors say that a stern chase is a long chase and that applied to the any sight portion of the Bell City Regional.

Ron Wigger, Remington Lyman, and Patti Clark were the top three after metallic sights and with scopes it would be a tough, though not impossible, task to catch them.

Wigger who had swept all of the iron sight matches had his string broken when Claudia Duksa, a Texas Christian University rifle shooter, pulled him up short with her pair of 198s for a 396-23X win in the 100 yard match. Lyman shot an excellent 200-15X on his second card to joun Wigger in splitting the 200 pot. He was also high Expert with a 393-20X. Jeff Henry’s 384-14X was the best Sharpshooter score while Marksman Dave Mulligan posted a 368-10X to win his class. Tom Lando took the unclassified class.

Duksa won the Dewar, but it was Claudia’s Dad Rich whose name was on the top of the list with a 395-20X. Craig Samuelson, a former Connecticut junior who has returned to the sport after a hiatus, was the top Expert. Henry repeated wining his class while Stephen Povroznik and Matt Lusaldi earned Marksman and unclassified honors.

Wigger finally returned to the winner’s circle at 50 yards firing a Reserve National Record tying score of 398-26, with a 200-15X for his final 20 shots, further splitting the 200 pot. Rhode Island’s Joe Graf took the Expert class with a 395-25X.A 384-12X earned Anthony Cuozzo first Sharpshooter. Provroznik repeated as top Marksman as did Lusaldi in Unclassfied.

Regional awards went to gold medalist Wigger, 2362-133X, the silver medallion winner was Lyman, 2351-111X, and with Clark taking the bronze with a 2320-72X. Expert class honors went to Xs with Jay Sonneborn, Jr.’s 2313-101 besting Graf’s 2313-90X.

Josie Burzynski-Smith shot six solid scores to earn her the sharpshooter title while Mulligan emerged the Marksman winner. Lando was the high unclassified shooter.

Rich Duksa was the high senior and Cuozzo was high junior.

The team match, a modified reverse Dewar, was won by the Bell City Bell Ringers, Clark, Greg Tomsen, and Jeff Doerschler. The special award went to Couzzo, Lisaldi, and Lando. Sonneborn Cubed, Grandpa Jay, Son, Jay, Jr., and grandson Chris, won the anchorman award. Quaker Hill’s Joe Smith won the 50/50 raffle.

The match was ably directed by Nicole Panko with the assistance of the two Anthonys: Tony the scorer and Couzzo, Sr. the line officer. Targets were run by Ryan Smith and Steve Proroznik.

The competitors returned home with most cleaning gear and then packing it back up for the trip to Camp Perry a little more than a week away.

CT: Perry Warm-Up Day 1

The Bell City Metric Prone Regional is the final warm up belly match in New England prior to Camp Perry. On iron sight day, a typically hot and humid July day, the range was uncommonly wind free early on as well as overcast. As the day wore on it picked up a bit and began switching from nine to three o’clock. None of this proved to be much of a hindrance to Major Ron Wigger, the West Point rifle coach, who won the first match, the 100 yard match with a 395-17X, and continued to run the rest of the day taking the Dewar with a 391-24X and the yard match with a 396-26X. His first card at 50 yards allowed him to take home some extra cash by virtue of winning the 200 pot with a clean with 15Xs, a rare 200 pot win with irons.

Wigger’s 1182-57X aggregate gave him a nine point pad on Expert class winner Remington Lyman who put together a 1171-47X. Lyamn swept all of the match wins in his class. Shawn Carpenter took the second place in the 100 yard match while Patti Clark gathered in the other two second places putting her third overall with a 1156-25X.

Unclassified shooters were lead by Tom Landro, an intermediate junior, won class honors at 100 yards and in the Dewar while cruising to a 1143-30X. Sonya May managed to break Landro’s strangle hold within the class by taking the yard match.

Sharpshooter Josie Burzynski-Smith captured the class with a 1148-43X and a win in the yard match. Her Brother Mike Burzynski was top Sharpshooter in the 100 yard match while Anthony Cuozzo was the best Sharpshooter in the Dewar.

Stephen Povroznik was at the top of the Marksman class in all individual matches, handily giving him the class win.

Weather for any sight day is predicted to be as hot as the shooting and Wigger is in the driver’s seat. But this is a metric match and this is Bell City so nothing is vouched safe to the leader.
