2014 & 2015 NRA Smallbore Championships are Moving

from HQ Moody

2014 & 2015 NRA Smallbore Championships are Moving

You have probably heard by now that we are moving the NRA SMALLBORE RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIPS to Bristol, IN, in 2014. This move is necessary to support the World Palma Rifle Championships scheduled to be held at Camp Perry in 2015. 2014 will be “dress rehearsal” for 2015.

The 2014 & 2015 Smallbore Rifle Championships are being planned at the Wa-Ke-De Range, Bristol, IN. Located just off the Indiana Toll Road, Interstate 80, approximately three hours due west of Camp Perry, OH. The Wa-Ke-De Range features a 100 point asphalt covered firing line and sits in a large grove of trees providing a beautiful setting and shelter from the wind. This range is ideal for smallbore rifle competition.

The tentative dates are July 14-25, 2014 (including the Metric Championship). We will have enough range space for 300 competitors. We are planning two barbecues, one for the Prone Championship and one for the Position Championship, and we are planning to have the Awards Ceremonies at Das Dutchman Essenhaus, an Amish style hotel with restaurants, shops, and a sit down family style dinner, for the Conventional Championships. We expect to have the Championship Program published — and on line — no later than Match 3rd, 2014 with registrations starting April 1, 2014.

We are currently working with the community to secure special rates for local lodging. Competitors who like to camp will have plenty of opportunity with a KOA Campground just a mile away from the range and there are 20 range RV hookups on the range. For those who wish to have hotel or motel accommodations, Das Dutch Essenhaus is located just five miles away next to Middleboro. There are about 8-10 hotels and restaurants just 10 to 15 minutes away from the range at exit 92. The Staff Hotel is the Baymont Inns and Suites, Elkhart, just a 10 minute drive from the range. Limited, special rate, rooms will be available.

If you would like more information please contact HQ Moody, 703-267-1475, or contact him directly if you are attending the 2013 NRA National Smallbore Rifle Championships, Camp Perry.

Single Minded but not Single Shot

by Hap Rocketto

I have been, not unfairly, accused of being a bit single minded when it comes to shooting. It is one of my consuming passions. I shoot a lot and when I am not I am either thinking, talking, or writing about it. I am also competitive and always on the lookout for any opportunity to improve my performance.

These character traits may have an upside in shooting, and in life, but it has a downside in my social life. My wife has given up playing board games with me because I can get pretty intense. My daughters won’t sit and watch TV quiz games with me because I am always shouting out answers since I want to beat the contestants to the draw. My behavior embarrasses the girls. I am not sure if it is my preening hubris or that I am correct much of the time that annoys them the most.

Not born a natural rifleman, I know what little I have accomplished in the sport has been in spite of me, not because of me. I have had poor vision since birth, a short fused temper, and am lazy. A lot of time and money spent at the optometrist’s office have helped me deal with the imperfect vision. My desire to be as good as I can at shooting has taught me to harness my temper as I quickly learned that few lapses of self-control are punished in a shooting match as swiftly and surely as a loss of temper.

I was lazy and my laziness led me to be, at best, a mediocre student during my grammar and high school years. I was not self disciplined and was easily distracted by the many interesting things that I saw and read about. My saving grace was The Old Man’s thick, black, brass buckled garrison belt which provided the external discipline I needed to avoid both juvenile hall and dropping out.

The other external factor was I could have no grade below C. While the school might allow a lesser grade Mom and The Old Man would not. To be good at shooting meant I had to discipline myself. I needed to be organized and focused.

This point was clearly driven home to me after I failed freshman algebra and was consigned to the purgatory of summer school where I managed a D and was allowed to become a sophomore. On the first day of school, much to my surprise, I noted that, my cronies were taking geometry but I was back in algebra. A quick visit to my guidance counselor revealed that my parents had called and had my schedule changed to allow me ample opportunity to earn the coveted gentlemanly C.

The immediate result was that I was forced to develop the character traits, organization, attention to detail, and perseverance, to pass algebra with a C. I then applied them to my shooting. The net result was I managed to graduate from high school, earned a brace of college degrees, went on to teach, ironically enough, high school algebra, and earned a few shooting honors along the way.

I am still single minded but not as single minded as Jim, an old All Guard High Power Rifle Team mate of mine who lived on a ranch and feed lot off of a county road in Montana. Like me he was trying to make the team back in the late 70s. Unlike me he had a bit of an advantage as he was able to build a basic 600 yard rifle range on his ranch’s grazing land. He was pretty much home on the range.

One day, after several particularly poor strings of rapid fire sitting practice he gave up in disgust at his performance, the words of his old coach ringing in his ears, “When you are hot shoot a lot, when not, stop.”

Jim was unpacking his gear from the bed of his pick up and starting to carry it to his house when the county sheriff pulled in to his driveway.

The sheriff, an old friend and a fellow squad leader in their National Guard outfit, alighted from his cruiser, tugged at his pistol belt, gave him a pleasant greeting and then asked, “Jim, did you shoot several strings of rapid fire about an hour ago?”

“Yes,” Jim responded.

“Did you miss the target with one of your shots?”

“Yes, I did. How did you know?” Jim asked.

“Well,” said the sheriff, “That round flew out of your spread onto County Road 51 and shattered a car’s windshield. The vehicle went out of control, crashed through a fence letting a herd of cattle out onto the highway. They milled about blocking the road. A fire truck on its way to a burning out building on the Farnsworth place couldn’t make it to the fire, and the building was totally destroyed. So, what are you going to do about it?”

Jim thought it over carefully and responded, “Next time I think I’ll take a notch up on my sling, tighten my right hand grip, and make sure I have a better spot weld.”

CT: Upcoming Matches

submitted by Anthony Cuozzo

Due to a paperwork snafu, the May 5th Presidents match will be rescheduled. I’ll be working with Blue Trail, and the NRA to expedite the new date. in the mean time don’t forget about the John K Lee match on May 11 & 12.. The June Regionals are set and the programs are attached. Pre reg is always helpful, I’m not so worried about the fees, but a heads up on the number of competitors is always helpful.

2013 Goodwill Trophy Team Match Results

Twenty-eighth Annual Rhode Island and Massachusetts Goodwill Trophy Match
by Hap Rocketto

The best available rifleman from the Rhode Island Smallbore Rifle League and the Massachusetts South Shore Rifle League squared off against each other in the 28th edition of the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Goodwill Trophy Match at the Angle Tree Rod and Gun Club in Attleboro, Massachusetts on April 23, 2013.

Under the watchful eye of Co-Match Directors Joe Graf, RI, and John Harney, MA, shooters from each league shot a three position course of fire, on the difficult NRA/USA 50 target. Only the high five scores count for the aggregate score and the Bay State team bested the Ocean State crew by a margin of 36 points, 1361 to 1325.

Dan McCabe and George Pantazelos both shot sold 280 scores for Massachusetts and Graf carded a match high 285 for Rhode Island. The support from Jack Donnelly, L. Girard, and Harney for McCabe and Pantazelos was about equal to that of Alex Muzzioli, Al Thurn, Carolyn Cote, and John Polesno but Rhode Island lacked the second 280 score to make the match tighter.

Angle Tree will be able to proudly display the Richard P. Hanson Trophy, named for the man who guided the Rhode Island Association for many years and strong supporter of this match, for the next year until the two leagues face off in this traditional interstate contest.

Vermont Advanced Junior Shooting Camp

Advanced Junior Shooting Camp For 14-20 year old Shooters Jericho, Vermont

Smallbore rifle only

The AJSC provides an excellent opportunity to hone your competitive rifle shooting skills this Summer. The camp features lots of one-on-one coaching as well as evening classes on important topics such as rules, collegiate shooting, nutrition, mental focus, training plans and much more.

The camp is led by top-level coaches who are members of the NRA/USAS/CMP National Coach Development Staff (NCDS). Vermont Winter Postal League Final Results 2013

Vermont Winter Postal League Final Results 2013

I would like to start out by thanking everyone for their participation in this year’s Rifle League. A special thank you goes out to all the Team Captains/Managers that helped report your scores to me, but most of all, for all of the work they do for their clubs. My first year running the league was a challenging one and I thank you all for your patience. It was much more of a learning curve than I expected. The best part was the e-mails that I shared with many of you, it was a pleasure getting to know you better. Please stay in contact. I hope that everyone enjoyed their season and I hope you will join us next year. Look for an e-mail in the fall with next year’s league announcement. Please feel free to share it with other clubs and individual shooters (check us out on Facebook). We will continue to make adjustments to improve the league and insure its continued success. Suggestions are welcome, especially during the off season.

Attached you will find the results from Match 10, and the Final League Results and Team Standings. I have also included some additional stats for your perusal. I will be mailing out award money to Team Captains within the next day or so.

Congratulations to Whitehall for once again taking home the Team Championship with a year end team total score of 15735. Their team was led by Jason Pratt with a 395.10 final Average. Second Place went to the Rough Riders of Plattsburgh with a Team Score of 15617, led by the shooting of Peter Visconti with a 395.20 average. Third place went to Jamestown with a Score of 15604 (just 13 pts out of 2nd) they were led by Todd Hanson 391.30.

Dan Lowe of Capital City had the overall highest 4-P Average with a 397.50. Second Place was Peter Visconti, Third Jason Pratt, Fourth Neal Lewis (Hartford) 394.70 and Pete Steffan (Whitehall) 394.60. These four shooters were less than a point apart in average. Jason led the league, average wise, for a majority of the season.

Dan Lowe (week 9) and Todd Hanson (week 3) both had the highest weekly score this year both shooting a score of 399. Dan Lowe and Frank Richards (Plattsburgh) were the only shooters to fire a perfect score in standing. In week 9 Dan decided to shoot standing instead of Sitting and Kneeling and fired a 299 in the final three stages.

This year was the first time we had a Prone Division, the competition among the top shooters was tight. The Top Shooter was Peter Visconti, who managed to go the entire season without dropping a point, ending up with a perfect 400 score. He was followed closely by Paul Deslierres (Plattsburgh Aces) who ended up with a 399.80 average and Armando Coello (Burlington) 399.33.

With regard to our final match of the season “Match 10” Whitehall took their usual place on top with a score of 1566, led by the shooting of Jim McGinis with a score of 393. Second place went to Jamestown by out shooting the Roughriders 1557 to 1552. Jamestown was led by David Alen 392 and Plattsburgh by Peter Visconti 396 (The top shooter this week). Hartford came in fourth just 8 pts behind Plattsburgh with a score of 1544, they were led by Neal Lewis 395.

The league average was a 362.3, the median score was a 375.

Our most improved shooters was the league’s youngest one Amy Visconti, of the Jr Rough Riders, who just started shooting this year her first match was a 347 Prone, and her highest was a 373 in match 9 (26 point increase in prone). Will Thouin, Marksman, was also another improved shooter in our 4-P Division 261 in his first match and 318 in Match 9, (57 point increase).

I hope to see you all next year, I am hoping that a few more clubs will join our league. We are also anticipating that the Prone Division will use the A-36 targets next year, and their scores will be used without any deduction toward their team score. This should make for some interesting results. Enjoy your summer and I hope to see you all at the range.

-Peter Visconti
