In the days before there was an awning there was “Old King” Cole, center, shooting standing with his trusty rifle “Darwin’s Delight.” Fred Cole, has been shooting since he joined his high school rifle team in 1937. Ten years later, after returning from World War II he was named an All American. 2010 marked his 73rd year of competition and, at the age of 88, he was assigned firing point 88 at The National Championships at Camp Perry where he has won six national titles.

Dan started shooting competitive smallbore in 1986. During his Junior career, he earned two national junior team titles as well as local and regional wins. After a 10 year year hiatus to attend college and start a family, Dan returned to the sport and has added local, sectional and regional wins to his shooting resume. Dan is a Distinguished Rifleman, National Record Holder, U.S Dewar Team Member, Black Hawk Rifle Club Member, Digby Hand Schützenverein member, and is the founder of pronematch.com. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and 2 children.

    The pic. and piece about Fred Cole brought back memories. Fred had his hands full for years trying to get the senior championship from Dr. Bob Makielski of Mishawaka, Indiana. Dr. “Bob” always noted that Fred was one of the toughest competitors he shot against.
