RI 4P Sectional

Don’t forget that there are a few slots left for the RI 4P Sectional this Sunday. The sitting stage is only 20 shots on the A-17…c’mon!

New Match Calendar

The other day Rick Johnson sent me an email suggesting that pronematch.com should have a calendar that has upcoming matches and events on it.  It’s a great idea but I was struggling with the best way to implement it on the website–I think I’ve found the answer. I’m using Google Calendar which allows other people (match directors that are added to the list) to add matches to the calendar. I’ve added the matches that I have on hand to the calendar, but I would prefer to give permission to whoever wants to add events to the calendar. So…if you’d like to be able to add matches to the pronematch.com calendar, drop me a line and I will add you to the list.

pronematch.com gets approximately 1000 unique visitors per month so it’s pretty good advertising for your match or event.

The only problem with a calendar like this is deciding how granular it should be. I think the best thing to do is limit the entries to actual events that the “general public” are able to participate in….

Honor was the Mead of Victory…

Honor was the Mead of Victory…
By Hap Rocketto

Every year, like clockwork, it seems that about the time of the various National Championships, be they the Civilian Marksmanship Program, the National Rifle Association, or USA Shooting, the various shooting websites ‘hits’ spike on the subject of awards. The general gist of the argument is that what ever organization, or organizations, one is affiliated with they are just not handing out enough or large enough awards in proportion to the entry fees paid.

The old timers drag out the tales of the days when the NRA gave away sterling silver flatware and platters, when there were target boys to change your targets in smallbore or the military pulled targets in highpower, and a case of 22 ammo had 10,000 rounds packed in a real well built wooden crate, not the effete 5,000 round cardboard boxes of today. Service rifle shooters complain that Distinguished Badges are now base metal coated only with a thin veneer of 1/10 karat gold, forgetting the real meaning of the award. Others bemoan the fact that if they shot shotgun instead and went to the Grand American, where there are “big money” awards they would do better, but they don’t seem to swapping their rifled firearms for smoothbore money guns. New Shooter Coming Out…

New Shooter Coming Out…
By Hap Rocketto

The Old Man was a great many things besides being an amazingly tolerant and understanding father. Most of all he was a raconteur, whose tales could sometimes reach Munchhausen proportions, yet were always just believable enough to make them seem realistic. His ongoing battle with the seemingly balky mechanism of his High Standard Model 102 , and the resultant convoluted reasoning and attendant tales that accompanied the malfunctions, gave him a great deal of opportunity to exercise his skill at suspending belief. His many tales of woe gave cause for his team mates on the Nutmeg Pistol Club to nickname him “Alibi Abe.” As he liked to put it, “They are my memories, not yours, and therefore I will not try to clear away the cloud of confusion that surrounds your inaccurate recollections with the truth as I see it.” Continue reading

New Year Dewar Match

Well today was the scheduled day for the annual New Year Dewar Match at Hopkinton. However, all of the snow and ice over the last few weeks has made the target frame holders inaccessible–too bad because it was a mild 17º in Hopkinton today. When/if we get a thaw in February I will try and re-schedule.

What’s in a name?

I’m considering a domain name change for pronematch.com. Seeing as this website encompasses more that just smallbore prone, I thought I’d open it up to suggestions for new domain names from the readership. So…leave a comment below with your suggestion….

Firearms Insurance

Following up on a post about firearms insurance I made this past summer, I notice that USA Shooting is now offering insurance to members. I haven’t compared this insurance to a typical homeowner’s rider, but I thought I would pass the info along.

The rider I have on my equipment (through my homeowner’s insurance) is about $75 per year and covers most of my equipment whether it is stolen, lost, or damaged…and there is NO DEDUCTIBLE.

Not all shooting need be down range…

One of the biggest moments in, what is laughingly known as, my shooting career is the day I got to stand on the stage at Perry and receive the Rheinische-Westfalischen-Sprengstoff Challenge Trophy from the hands of Edie Reynolds, Chair of the NRA Smallbore Committee and fellow member of the Black Hawk Rifle Club. The RWS Trophy was originally awarded to the winner of an international postal match among the teams from the United States, Great Britain and Germany from 1933 to 1938. It takes its name from the donor, the noted German munitions manufacturer. Continue reading

A Short History of the the Sling
By Hap Rocketto

“Rifle training was serious business, and we worked at it for several months each year. The positions were standing, or offhand as we called it, sitting, kneeling, and prone, all using the rifle sling for support. The sling, a leather strap attached to the rifle for carrying the piece, was a necessary aid for accurate shooting.” So remembers Victor Vogel, in his elegantly simple memoirs of life as an enlisted infantryman in the United States Army between the World Wars, Continue reading
