Colonels are Methodist, Married or Mad

by Hap Rocketto

A lull in the firing, as I sat behind the line as a scorer during the 2005 Pershing Match, allowed my mind to part its moorings from the job at hand and drift into distant waters. Idle thoughts about the British lead me to recall how that particular race prized eccentricity.  The characters that immediately popped into my empty mind were my favorite military eccentrics; Sir Richard Francis Burton, not the actor but rather the explorer, linguist, scholar, soldier, anthropologist, and prolific writer, Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence, and Major General Orde Charles Wingate.

Burton is most famous for discovering the source of the Nile with his partner, John Hanning Speke, in 1858.  Among the literati he is known as the man who translated the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra into English. Strangely enough this brave man admitted to a fear of the dark and so, when he died in 1880, his wife Isabel prepared a stone tomb in tent-like form with a stained-glass window.   The story of Burton’s expedition to the source of the Nile was made into a film, Mountains of the Moon, in 1990.

A few years after Burton died Thomas Edward Lawrence was born.  Better known to the public as “Lawrence of Arabia” he became famous for his exploits as a British soldier and leader of the Arab Revolt during World War I. Later he enlisted in the ranks of the Royal Air Force under a false name until discovered and discharged. After all, he had been a colonel in 1918. He enlisted again, this time in the Tank Corps and succeeded in getting transferred back to the RAF where he served as a Leading Aircraftsman.  He died, under what some consider mysterious circumstances, in a motor cycle accident in 1935.  Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean’s epic cinematic treatment of Lawrence’s life was released in 1962. The RI 3P Smallbore Rifle League is Underway

by Joe Graf

The RI Smallbore Rifle League started its indoor season this past Thursday, Oct 15th. This is the second year the league is using a handicap system to determine the team results, and I am really pleased with the handicap system that has been put in place. The handicap system rewards shooters that perform better than their year-to-date average. For the first match of the season, shooters use their average from the previous season. Continue reading

Where do you call home?
North Carolina

How long have you been shooting?
About 4 years

What is a little known fact about yourself that your fellow competitors might not know?
Growing up before shooting I competed in pageants, danced, and tumbled

What do you consider your finest shooting achievement.
Winning the gold medal at the National Junior Olympics for the J3 division in 3p small-bore.

What is your favorite pre-match meal?
I would have to say Hampton Inn breakfast consisting of fruit loops and yogurt, or a chocolate chip bagel from Panera Bread.

What is your favorite post match drink?
Water! It’s the best after a long hot North Carolina day.

Do you have a favorite shooting range?
I like the Wake County Firearms and Training Center, where I do all of my practice, just because I am most familiar with it.

Do you have any short term and/or long term goals?
I want to continue to go back to the Junior Olympics, and I’d love to one day shoot for the USA in the Olympics or overseas.

What shooting skill are currently focusing your energy on?
I’m always working on all three of my positions, but recently I got an air rifle, so I am putting a lot of time into that right now.

Thanks Megan for sharing a little bit about yourself with the pronematch.com community!

An Introduction to United States Smallbore Rifle Shooting

by Hap Rocketto

Smallbore shooting, as we know it in the United States, dates from 1919. It was then that Savage and Winchester introduced specialized 22 caliber target rifles, the Model 19 NRA Match Rifle and the celebrated Model 52 respectively, for the first smallbore competition held at the National Matches. Conducted in late August, at the United States Navy’s range near Caldwell, New Jersey, the program called for a series of reentry and squadded slow, timed, and rapid-fire matches in various positions, at distances from 50 to 100 yards. Army Captain E.C. Crossman was charged with conducting what was then known as ‘miniature’ rifle shooting competition in the shadow of the service rifle matches. So popular proved smallbore that the National Rifle Association immediately appointed a committee to make recommendations for the standardization and introduction of smallbore rifle shooting into its program.

The lead editorial in the September 6, 1919 issue of Arms and The Man stated that, “The appointment of a committee to consider the standardization of the small-bore game…may be expected to result in a rapid and healthy growth in this sport in all parts of the country.” Two weeks later the magazine reported on the efforts of the committee to establish the fledgling sport. The original courses of fire were 25 yards for indoor shooting and 50, 100, and 200 for the outdoor competitions, all in the prone position. Continue reading

Shooter Spotlight: Bill Neff

The purpose of the “Shooter Spotlight” is to help shooters get to know their fellow competitors a little bit better. We cover a wide range of shooters from “Marksman to Master.” This is the 7th interview in the series.

Bill Neff

Where do you call home?
I grew up in Avon, CT and today I live in NJ and work in NYC.

How long have you been shooting?
I have been shooting competitively for 29 years.  This includes both smallbore and highpower (XTC & Long Range).

How did you get involved in shooting competitively?
I attended Boy Scout camp when I was 10 and during my Father’s visit we went to their 50 foot .22 range.  I shot a 5 shot group that impressed my Father and he let me know of his involvement with competitive shooting as well as his Sister and my Grandfather.  Then when I was 13, we joined a local club (Metacon) and here I am today.

What is a little known fact about yourself that your fellow competitors might not know?
I was a member of USAF High Power Team and shot for them at Perry during 1991, 1992, and 1993.

What do you consider your finest shooting achievement.
Earning my distinguished prone as there have not been very many awarded since their inception in 1966.

What is your favorite pre-match meal?
I do not have a favorite pre-match meal.

What is your favorite post match drink?
My favorite post match drink would be Diet Mt Dew.  With the exception of two match in NJ each summer, the closet range I shoot on is 90 miles away with several being at about 180 miles.  Needless to say I need the caffeine kick to help me on the drive home from a match.

Do you have a favorite shooting range?
I cannot list a single range as my favorite, but instead would include the following:
– Most beautiful – Douglas Ridge, Oregon – Everything is green
– Most nostalgic – Blue Trails as my Dad, Aunt and Grandfather started shooting their in 1947/48
– Most enjoyable  – North End, Seitzland, Palmyra, Wilkes Barre, Dauphin, Manassas, and Phoenix – Lost of history, good food, great competitors and friends
– Most Challenging Smallbore – Camp Perry – It seldom dissapoints
– Most Challenging Highpower – Medford, OR which is the only range on which I have seen the 300 and 600 yd flags flying in direct opposition of each other

What shooting skill are currently focusing your energy on?
I am focusing on shot to shot consistency to include NPA, sight alignment, trigger work, shot execution and follow-through.  I find that my diary has helped me with these as I can review what I have done correctly as well as what I need to focus on during the match/day. This allows the score to happen as oppossed to focusing on a desired score and then working on my technique.

Thanks Bill for sharing a little bit about yourself with the pronematch.com community!

2009 Fall Foliage Match Wrap-Up

by Digby Hand

The much-coveted Jim Knapp Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Fall Foliage 3200 each year. This year's winner: Bill Neff

The much-coveted Jim Knapp Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Fall Foliage 3200 each year. This year's winner: Bill Neff

A leaden sky and a soaking rain, which was too late to help save the local tomato crop, greeted the competitors setting up for the Fall Foliage Regional at Hopkinton Sportsmen’s Association on October 4th. Either chance or the Machiavellian machinations of the match director saw the heavy hitters occupying the far right hand end of the line, next to the strategically placed free coffee and doughnuts.

New Jersey rifleman Bill Neff set the pace for the iron sight day with a 400-34X in the opening 50 Yard match. He was closely followed by junior Brian Jylkka’s 33X clean as well as perfect scores from Erik Hoskins, Justin Tracy, and Claudia Duksa. Neff rolled through the Meter Match with a 400-34Xs, with a clean from Duksa keeping up the pressure while Hoskins and Tracy each dropped a point. By this time, defending Knapp Trophy winner Hap Rocketto, was already into the free doughnuts to ease the pain of dropping enough points to place a repeat out of reach. Continue reading
