RI: Outdoor 3P State Champ Results

Joe Graf and Emily Britt are the reigning champions of the combined 2012 Rhode Island State Three Position Championship and NRA Metric Position Regional. They were joined by smallbore competitors from four of the six New England states at the South County Rod and Gun Club in West Greenwich, RI.

The day began with the prone match which was shot in bright sunshine and shifting winds, which were difficult to read in the clear dry air. It was a close fought match with Hap Rocketto, of Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club, edging out Joe Graf, of the Smithfield Sportsmen’s Club, by a point. Graf lead by three points after the first card but Rocketto held hard on the second 20 shots making up the difference and adding a point to finish with a 388-15X to Graf’s 387-15X. New Hampshire’s Bob Lynn’s 387-11X took the third spot.

Britt, a junior representing the Niantic, CT Sportsmen’s Club, elected to shoot the match with a scope. She posted a 369-11X in a standing match marked by buffeting winds to overcome a mediocre prone and leap into the lead. Robert Roland shot a 339-4X for second just an X ahead of third place Ernie Mellor of Quaker Hill.

Britt’s commanding lead would require a near perfect score Kneeling from her closest challengers and a total collapse on her part to deny her the gold medallion. It rained on the second kneeling relay on which Britt was squadded but that did little to slow up her up. Joe Graf won the kneeling match with a 374-12X but Britt was second with a 373-9X and that wrapped up her win. Mellor was third with a 367-10X.

Britt was the Regional winner with an 1123-32X, Alex Martin, from Swanzey, N.H. shoots for the Ferrybrook Junior Rifle Team for Cheshire County Fish and Game and will be a freshman rifleman at North Carolina State in the fall, won the silver with a 1106-27X. Mellor took the bronze. Rocketto was high Master, Lynn the top Expert, Danielle Makucevich, of Newport Rifle Club took Sharpshooter honors, and Newport Rifle Club’s Alex Muzzioli was top Marksman.

Graf earned the Rhode Island Open title and the junior champion is Danielle Makucevich of the Newport Rifle Club. Each will have their name engraved upon the Jules Epstein Trophy in recognition of their feat.

Nicole Panko handed the statistical office with the assistance of Ken Robichaud. Mark Sloan served as Range Officer while South County’s Dick O’Rourke and Joe Galligan handled the targets.

NC: 72nd Annual Black Hawk Open Prone 3200 Report

Below (and attached in a JPG file) is a snapshot of the winners and the final score board at the 72nd Annual Black Hawk Open SB prone 3200 fired at the Asheville Rifle and Pistol Club, Asheville, NC, on May 26-27. The 37 competitors who fired for record on Saturday and Sunday enjoyed beautiful spring-like weather. But despite the mild weather, conditions were tricky nonetheless – especially at 100 yards — because Asheville has no wind flags and shooters had to depend solely on windmills at the firing line and whatever other natural indications of condition they could detect. As a result, there were no 1600s in either aggregate. Kent Reeve the won metallic sight aggregate with a 1598-125x and Dave Cramer won the any sight aggregates with 1599-144x (Charlie Kemp, Mark DelCotto and Ed Foley also posted 1599s in the any sight aggregate).

The tournament winner was Dave Cramer with a grand aggregate score 3196-253x and took home the lion’s share of the bling and largess. This was Dave’s third Black Open win since 2003.

NH: Outdoor Conv 3P Regional/State Champ Results

You rarely get better conditions for an outdoor match. The sun/cloud rythmn was almost predictable across the seven hours of alternating relays. Only sometimes did the swirly breezes kick up enough energy to make the shooters hesitate.  One of oddest natural elements seen throughout the day were the thick and yellow waves of falling pollen as the NH white pines were stirred by those breezes.  Someone commented on how the Match Directors blue car appeared lime green after being covered by the day of “pollenfall”.

Competitors from four states came to Hudson, NH. for the Conventional 3P Regional and State Championship match.  Outdoor match experience between the 26 competitors ranged from decades of tournament tested toughness to first time rookies.  By 5:30, the scoring was complete and the results were final.

GA: Dixieland Regional Championships, June 16-17

The 43rd Annual Dixieland Regional Championships sponsored by River Bend Gun Club will be held on June 16-17.  The Dixieland is a 2-day NRA conventional 3200 regional championship tournament with the metallic sight championship contested on Saturday, June 16, and the any sight championship on Sunday, June 17.  The program also includes a 2-man team match fired on Sunday morning at approximately 7:30 AM.  All matches will be fired on RBGC’s Multi-purpose 2 range (MP-2).

West Point Black Knight Award Nominees

The Army Athletic Association is hosting our annual Black Knight Awards on Sunday May 29th. In attendance will be all the varsity athletes and parents, West Point Superintendant, West Point Commandant and the Athletic Department staff. This is a night to recognize the outstanding achievements from our cadets while they are competing on the fields of friendly strife.

Army Rifle could use your support in two of our team members who are up for athletic awards. Firstie Kelly Buck ( Reading, MA)  has been nominated for Woman’s Firstie of the Year. She is a 3 time All American Rifle shooter in smallbore and air rifle. GARC smallbore champion in 2012, West Point 3 position record holder with a score of 591, 4th place in air rifle and 6th in smallbore  at NCAA, her teams competed in NCAA finals all  4 years.

The rifle team is also nominated for Team of the Year. Show your support and have some fun on Facebook.

Yearling ( sophomore )  Michael Matthews is deserving of awards this year. He won the Junior Olympic 3 Position Rifle Championships a few weeks ago and placed 3rd in the Prone event. Back in March he placed second behind Olympian Sarah Scherer in the NCAA smallbore competition. He also earned a Second Team All-American in smallbore. Michael has been nominated for Performance of the Year. Please vote for him on facebook as well as write his name in for Yearling of the Year! Michael’s accomplishments were outstanding this season.
