Shooter Spotlight: Kevin Nevius

The purpose of the “Shooter Spotlight” is to help shooters get to know their fellow competitors a little bit better. We cover a wide range of shooters from “Marksman to Master.” This is the fifth interview in the series.

How long have you been shooting?
Smallbore since 1989, Long Range HP since 1993

How did you get involved in shooting competitively?
My dad would not allow my siblings and I to have any firearms, so I started really late (you know what happens when you tell a child they CAN’T have something!!). My brother got me into long range varmint hunting and I started building my own guns very early. I had a hunting friend who shot indoor smallbore who started me in three position and I was hooked. I have focused on prone shooting primarily the past few years (smallbore and LR high power) pretty much because my standing scores were awful!

What is a little known fact about yourself that your fellow competitors might not know?
I play piano (keyboards) and persued a career in that field in my youth. I am a structural engineer and have been with the same firm for 24 years.

What do you consider your finest shooting achievement.
Winning the smallbore prone National title in 2008 (definitely!!), the Roberts team to England this year and the Sierra trophy Palma aggregate in 2005 and 2006.

What is your favorite pre-match meal?
I adore pasta! (that’s amore!)

What is your favorite post match drink?
Any dark beer is good!

Do you have a favorite shooting range?
I have one at home so that would definitely be it!

Do you have any short term and/or long term goals?
I was blessed to win the Nationals, and I don’t know if lightning strikes twice (but I would love to try!). I would love to make the Pershing team in four years, maybe the Roberts team again (in eight years)

What shooting skill are currently focusing your energy on?
My first love will always be smallbore prone – I devote a very large part of my building / testing and training time to it.

Thanks Kevin for sharing a little bit about yourself with the pronematch.com community!

My dear friend Kevin, whom I will always consider the Bart Simpson of the 2009 Roberts Team, plays the keyboard almost as well as he shoots-and that is saying something.

He did not mention his secret shame as a lover of pasta, that of actually eating the egg noodles and tomato ketchup passed off as pasta and red sauce at Phil’s Inn in Port Clinton. But, then again, what would one expect of a fan of the Cleveland Indians.

  2. RickCurtis says:

Kevin, you are a class act and this was a great read. Thanks for sharing and if what Hap says is true I must bring you some real sauce for your pasta!

  3. kevin nevius says:

Thanks for the kind words Rick………and Hap (?!?)

Both of you rank on my top ten list of people I love to pieces (not telling exactly where you rank though!)

See you soon (I hope) – God bless you both!

  4. Kent says:

What a nice write up about a super nice person and super good shooter. Kevin is always humble, very polite, and willing to help. Here's a prime example…while at Camp Perry Smallbore Prone this year, 200 rounds of my ammo walked off, leaving me short of ammo to finish. Kevin cheerfully loaned me some of his and I will always remember his kindness as one of the best sportsmanship moments of my first Camp Perry Smallbore Prone. Saying he is a class act is an understatement…….

    Best Regards,

    Kent

Kevin is a class act and has become a very close friend. I only wish that I lived closer to him so we could attend some more of the same matches to enjoy the competition and discussions.

One item that I need to point out is that Kevin is one of the finest gunsmiths in the US today. I have seen his work and I am proud to shoot a rifle that was 'smithed by Kevin. Winners know who the right person is to make their equipment world class….the "Who's Who of Shooting" for his rifles is both impressive and extensive.

I wish I had been able to make the trip to the UK…..

What can I say – you and I are brothers in every way. I was proud of you and your acomplishments this year! You are an amazing person, and an even greater talent!
I love a guy with "stones" – you got um in SPADES brother!
    Blessings,
    kev
